The Exploratorium

Outdoor, open-ended play where children build, experiment, and follow their curiosities

Service Description

The Exploratorium is The Yard’s outdoor making and play space, designed for children to explore freely, follow their curiosity, and engage deeply with materials. This is not a structured activity or a guided class. Instead, children are invited into a carefully prepared environment filled with loose parts, real tools, sensory elements, and opportunities for physical and creative play. They choose where to go, what to explore, and how long to stay with an idea. Some children spend time building, testing, and adjusting. Others dig, mix, carry, climb, or collaborate. There is no expectation to produce a finished result and no pressure to participate in a particular way. Our role is to set the space up thoughtfully, ensure materials are available and safe, and support children as needed — without directing or interrupting their process. The Exploratorium supports: • independence and confidence • problem-solving and persistence • physical movement and coordination • imaginative and social play Sessions are intentionally limited so the space remains calm, well-resourced, and unhurried. This is a place where children are trusted as capable, curious, and full of ideas — and where play is valued as meaningful in its own right.
