Potion lab
Adults to accompany children
Service Description
Step into the Potion Lab, a sensory-rich workshop where children mix, experiment and create using real ingredients, open-ended materials, and their own curiosity then take their ideas one step further by creating a personal potion box to bring home. This is not a recipe-based activity. There are no instructions to follow and no expected end result. Instead, children explore through hands-on experimentation, combining ingredients, testing ideas, and discovering what happens next. During the session, children will move between two connected experiences: Potion Making & Experimentation Children will: - Mix and combine a variety of powders, liquids and natural materials Create fizzing reactions, colour changes and textured mixtures Scoop, pour, stir and measure using different tools and containers Test, adjust and refine their ideas through trial and discovery Create Your Own Potion Box Children will then: Design and assemble their own potion box Select and fill containers with their chosen ingredients Curate a collection of materials to continue experimenting at home Make decisions about what to include based on their own interests and discoveries Our facilitators support children to notice, question and extend their thinking, but the process is always led by the child. This is where learning becomes visible as children predict, experiment, and adapt in real time. We begin with a short introduction to materials and safe use, then the space opens for exploration and making. The Potion Lab is ideal for children who: Enjoy sensory play and hands-on experimentation Are curious about mixing, reactions and materials Like to explore without fixed outcomes or instructions Thrive in environments that encourage creativity and discovery What to expect: A 90-minute workshop combining experimentation and making Open-ended potion play using a wide range of ingredients Creation of a take-home potion box with selected materials A focus on process, choice and ownership Important information: Suitable for children aged 3+ (younger children with close adult supervision) Some materials may be messy - dress accordingly All ingredients are provided and selected for safe use within the session Children must be supervised by their accompanying adult This is more than mixing - it’s about exploring, deciding and creating something that continues beyond the session. At The Yard, we don’t give children recipes. We give them materials and trust them to decide what happens
