Build and grow Workshop
Hands-on experience in woodworking
Service Description
Step into Build & Grow a hands-on workshop where children construct, create and plant, combining real tools with natural materials to design something that continues to grow beyond the session. This is not a step-by-step project. There are no identical outcomes and no pressure to “get it right.” Instead, children are invited into a high-trust environment where they can design, build and make decisions, then connect their work to the living world through planting. During the session, children will move between two connected experiences: Build & Construct Children will: Use real tools such as hammers, hand drills and screwdrivers Work with wood, recycled materials and loose parts Design and build their own planter, structure or base Problem-solve, adapt and refine their ideas as they work Plant & Grow Children will then: Add soil and select from a range of plants, seeds or natural elements Decide how their creation will function — as a planter, habitat or decorative piece Arrange and adjust materials based on their own vision Create something that can be cared for and continued at home Our facilitators support safe tool use, model techniques and encourage thinking, but the direction always comes from the child. This is where capability develops as children take ownership of their ideas and see them come to life. We begin with a short safety introduction to tools and materials, then the space opens for building and creating. The Build & Grow workshop is ideal for children who: Enjoy working with their hands and using real tools Are curious about building, design and how things fit together Like combining making with nature Benefit from open-ended, self-directed experiences What to expect: A 90-minute workshop combining construction and planting Access to a wide range of tools and materials Creation of a functional piece to take home and continue growing A focus on process, decision-making and ownership Important information: Suitable for children aged 5+ (younger children may participate with close adult support) Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended Children must be supervised by their accompanying adult All tools and materials are used within clear safety boundaries This is more than building it’s about creating something meaningful, then watching it evolve over time. At The Yard, we don’t hand children finished projects. We give them tools, materials and living elements and trust them to bring it together.
