First time at The Yard?
If you’re new here, you’re in the right place.
The Yard is designed for children to create, explore, and experiment in their own way — and for adults to feel confident, supported, and relaxed while that happens. Here’s what to expect on your first visit.
Which space should we start with?
Most first-time families start with one of these:
If your child loves making things with their hands
👉 The Makery
A calmer, indoor creative space focused on hands-on making.
If your child needs space to move, explore, and experiment
👉 The Exploratorium
Our outdoor, large-scale play space designed for movement, problem-solving, and curiosity.
If you’re still unsure, that’s okay — many families try one and then come back for the other.

What happens when you arrive
When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed — and your child is free to start exploring right away.
Some children jump straight in.
Others watch first, wander, or take their time.
All of that is completely normal.
What children do at The Yard
Children choose:
-
what they make
-
how long they stay with an activity
-
whether they work alone or alongside others
There are real materials, real tools, and open-ended resources — not step-by-step crafts or expected outcomes.
Some children build.
Some paint.
Some mix, test, carry, dismantle, or invent.
There’s no “right” way to do it.
What adults do
Adults don’t need to plan, prep, or direct.
You can:
-
observe
-
chat
-
support when needed
-
or simply enjoy watching your child in their creative flow
Our role is to set up the space thoughtfully and keep things safe, so you don’t have to manage the experience.

What to wear (and what not to worry about)
-
Comfortable clothes that can get messy
-
Closed-in shoes for outdoor play
-
No need to bring anything else
We provide all materials and clean-up.
Yes — play can get messy.
No — you don’t have to clean it up later.
