Many creative classes focus on following instructions or producing the same result.
Children are often shown what to make rather than supported to explore how things work.

Makery Skill Sessions are designed differently.
At The Yard, we prepare the Makery intentionally.
Each session introduces one core making skill, supported by carefully chosen materials and tools.

Children are trusted as capable decision-makers.
What happens during a Makery skill session?
Each Makery Skill Session follows a clear rhythm:
-
Skill introduction
A short, age-appropriate introduction to one making skill (for example: tool use, joining materials, or designing structures). -
Child-led application
Children decide how to use the skill in their own project. There are no templates and no identical outcomes. -
Guided support
Facilitators support problem-solving, safe tool use, and decision-making — without taking over.

Who are the Makery skill sessions for
Makery Skill Sessions suit children who:
-
enjoy building, experimenting, or figuring things out
-
like working with increasing independence
-
are curious about how things are made
They may not suit children who:
-
prefer step-by-step instruction
-
need constant direction
-
are focused on producing a specific outcome

No templates. No pressure. Just space to make.
Children leave with:

-
a clearer understanding of how materials behave
-
increased confidence using tools and techniques
-
experience planning, testing, and adjusting ideas
-
a sense of ownership over what they created

There is no pressure to finish a particular product.
The focus is on understanding, experimentation, and growth.
