Makery (Tool shed)
Adults must accompany.
Service Description
Step into the Tool Shed, a hands-on making space where children use real tools, real materials, and their own ideas to build, experiment and create. This is not a step-by-step workshop. There are no templates to follow and no “right” outcome. Instead, children are invited into a high-trust environment where they can explore tools with guidance, take risks, solve problems, and experience the satisfaction of making something that is entirely their own. Inside the Tool Shed, children may choose to: -Use hammers, nails, hand drills and screwdrivers -Construct with wood, recycled materials and loose parts -Design, deconstruct, and rebuild their ideas as they go -Work independently or collaborate with others Our facilitators are present to support safe tool use, model techniques, and encourage thinking, but the direction always comes from the child. This is where confidence grows, not from being shown what to do, but from figuring it out. We begin each session with a short safety introduction so children understand how to use tools responsibly and how to keep themselves and others safe. From there, the space opens up for exploration. The Tool Shed is ideal for children who: -Enjoy building, tinkering and working with their hands -Are curious about how things work -Benefit from open-ended, self-directed experiences -Are ready to be trusted with real tools in a supported environment What to expect: - A 60-minute hands-on making session - Access to a wide range of tools and materials - Freedom to create without pressure or expectation - A focus on process over product Important information: - Suitable for children aged 5+ (younger children may participate with close adult support) - Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended - Children must be supervised by their accompanying adult - All materials and tool use are guided within clear safety boundaries This is more than just making. it’s about building capability, confidence and creativity. At The Yard, we don’t tell children what to make. We give them the tools and trust them to begin.
